This program is designed to enable students to acquire both Japanese and English proficiency, as well as sound academic skills. Katoh Gakuen Gyoshu Elementary School became the first school in Japan to introduce an English immersion program in 1992. This program is implemented based upon the curriculum guideline designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, and students learn a variety of subjects (such as math, science, and life environment studies) in English. It aims for the acquisition of practical English and the facilitation of cultural understanding through conducting 50% or more of a school day in English, rather than teaching English as one subject.
